Ms. Dapp

Spring is officially here! The days are longer and the students are enjoying more outdoor time. We are all feeling a touch of spring fever! Nevertheless, the students continue to work hard.

We are finishing our study of Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Our discussions involved predicting, analyzing Kate DiCamillo's text structure, comparing and contrasting characters, identifying themes, and stating various characters' points of view. After reading the book, we will watch the movie, then compare and contrast elements of the story. We are all sorry to see the story come to an end. Because of Winn-Dixie has become a favorite for all of us!

Writing fictional stories is our new writing focus. The students will draft, revise, and edit a realistic fiction story. Through this process they will develop a main character, create a simple plot, integrate sensory images into the story, use dialogue, and write a final copy for an audience.

In math we are working with fractions. We are comparing fractions, placing them on a number line, and identifying equivalent fractions. The students are using fractions to estimate the length of objects, then creating line plots to show their data. We also continue to practice the multiplication and division facts. Please continue to work with your child on these facts. Each child should know all of the facts up to 12.

As we continue through the new social studies text, we will be exploring immigration throughout  U.S. history. The students will discover why people immigrate to the U.S. They will read about their challenges and opportunities. They will also explore the different cultures that make up our country.

Be sure to discuss our school day with your child to help them review the skills we practiced and to help you stay informed. Thank you for your continued support!
