    Course Description: 

    A comprehensive introduction to the practical use of the target language of French, which explores both the self and the world around students through the lens of the culture of French-speaking countries.

    Units of Study:

    Unit #1 : Communicating in the French Speaking World

    Unit Summary: Students will learn how to communicate with and introduce friends and family, introduce themselves and others, give their age and the age of others, understand the French-speaking world, compare French and American greetings, and compare French and American ideas concerning  friends and family.

    Unit #2: Food and Feasts

    Unit Summary: Students will learn how to identify French foods, order food and drink in a restaurant or café, prepare various French specialities, pay for items, compare French and American mealtimes and shopping trends, and compare French and American holiday traditions and celebrations. 

    Unit #3: Day In, Day Out 

    Unit Summary: Students will be able to express the time and date, describe the weather and climate of French-speaking countries, understand and use the 24 Hour Clock, inquire as to what time events take place, celebrate Mardi Gras, and explore New Orleans.

    Unit #4:  School Life and Leisure Activities

    Unit Summary: Students will communicate about their daily activities and school life, while comparing and contrasting leisure activities and school life of U.S. students to those of students in French-speaking countries.

     

  • French B

    Course Description: 

    This course is a continuation of the study of the French language and culture as introduced in French A. Students will review and expand upon previously learned vocabulary and concepts, while acquiring the skills needed to better communicate in the target language and further explore the culture of various French-speaking countries.

    Units of Study:

    Unit #1 :Let’s Reminisce

    Unit Summary: Students will reinforce and expand upon key concepts learned in French A, while communicating about their daily activities and school life. Students will additionally explore the province of Quebec, its people, pastimes, and history.

    Unit #2: Gathering Information 

    Unit Summary: In this unit, students will compose information questions, give descriptions and locations using être, and discuss what people do and make utilizing faire expressions.

    Unit #3: People, Places, and Things 

    Unit Summary: Students will be able to describe in detail: people, their bedroom, and objects associated with leisure activities. Students will compare themselves to their friends, differentiate between definite and indefinite articles, state opinions, compare the procedures for obtaining a driver’s license in France to those in the U.S., create artwork using Pointillism, and understand the impact of hurricane Katrina on the economy, structure, and people of New Orleans.

    Unit #4: At Home and Around Town

    Unit Summary: In this unit, students will describe their home and neighborhood, give and understand directions, explore cities, and compare typical French homes and cities to American ones. 

     

     

  • French C

    Course Description: 

    This course is a continuation of the study of the French language and culture as introduced in French A and B. Students will review and master previously learned vocabulary and concepts, while expanding and refining their language skills. Students will additionally continue to explore the traditions, geography, and customs of various French-speaking countries.

    Units of Study:

    Unit 1: Allons-y!

    Unit Summary: Students will reinforce and expand upon key concepts learned in French A and B, while communicating about their future plans, daily activities, town, talents, family, friends and school life. Students will additionally explore the French city of Tours, and discuss how and why some traditional American customs and celebrations have gained popularity in France.

    Unit 2: C'est chic!

    Unit Summary: In this unit, students will describe clothing, discuss style, shop, organize a fashion show, make comparisons, and point out objects. Additionally, students will compare French and American stores and shopping trends and differentiate between how French and American teenagers earn and spend their money.  

    Unit 3: Vive les vacances!

    Unit Summary: Students will be able to describe in detail: weekend plans, individual summer and winter sports, vacation/travel plans, and past events. Additionally, students will explore Paris and Normandy, paint with the Impressionists, and compare their typical weekend and vacation activities to those of French teenagers.
